Why did not these ancient worthies receive the promise?

"And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided
some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect." Heb. 11: 39,40.

What in the early church showed living faith?
To whom will the gates of the heavenly city finally be opened?
With what did He say they would he baptized?
Why did the Lord destroy Sodom?
